Understanding the Art Museum Chapter 3 Question

Assignment from end of Chapter 3

Research installations by artists such as Kiki Smith, Bill Viola, or Jenny Holzer.
How does the artwork interact with the physical space it occupies? Argue for or against the ideas and principles behind installation art.

Kiki Smith:
 "Untitled" (Butterflies)
 https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/236x/fd/fc/b6/fdfcb697729bfe70e2d64d9e4747bea4.jpg
Sculpture

I feel like this piece is less installation work and more sculptural. I think that it could be placed in the a different place and get the same feeling or emotion from the piece. It really seems like this piece is not really an installation work.

Bill Viola:
 "The Veiling"
 http://images.jamescohan.com/www_jamescohan_com/125335232daf0d067.jpg
Fabric "veils" with projections

This installation definitely works with the location by the veils being designed to be viewed in this space and meant to be in this dark room so that you can view the projections on the veils. The piece only works in a dark room because it needs the lack of light to showcase this work. Another part of this work is that it makes the room feel almost claustrophobic, which I believe adds to the work.

Jenny Holzer:
"Protect Me From What I Want"

http://www.arthistoryarchive.com/arthistory/contemporary/images/JennyHolzer-TimesSquare.jpg
Installed in New York City- Times Square

This work interacts with the location by the text being very much about materialism. By it being in Times Square it adds to the subject about materialism and consumerism. This piece needs to be in this location in order for it to keep the power that is has.

Installation work has a chance to be really great. However, some work that is considered to be installation work could be installed any where. I feel like installation work should be made specifically for a certain location.

Section A
We tried to keep in mind how we were placing the art work. We tried to mix in the color work with the back and white works as well as keep in mind directional compositions. For instance, the Whale painting makes you want to go to the right, so we placed it around the middle of the section to keep people moving through out the area. We also tried to keep the bid cards off of the easels by placing the card on the columns or on the wall behind the art work. We chose to start the group off with a very colorful piece that we felt would lead the audience into the section.

Gallery Questions/ Vanessa German Exhibit

Functional Considerations
Traffic flow has been thought about with the Vanessa German exhibit. You can walk around almost all of the works and they almost lead you throughout the space.
The exhibition seems for the most part pretty durable. There are some things on her sculptures that are fragile, but they seem to be put together well. The pedestals that the sculptures are on are sturdy.
The reading heights of the labels are in good spots. They are all located on the same spots on all of the pedestals. The only dangerous aspect of the exhibit could be that the largest one of the sculptures in the back of the gallery has a little bit of overhang (the pedestal is a little bit too small).
Disabled people could experience this event with some ease. There is enough room for someone with a wheel chair to be able to navigate through the gallery easily as well as the labels are not too high up.The labels are easily readable. They don't have any sort of strange or difficult type to read.

Formal Consideration
The choice of the font was good. It was simple enough that it did not distract from the artwork.
There was a visual unity with this exhibit because all of her artwork seemed to flow together very well. Nothing seemed to be out of place.

Conceptual considerations
The overall message of this exhibit is to me... Through her artwork, Vanessa German wants the viewer to see things in a new light, to appreciate items and to really things about those items and the different meanings they can have.
I feel that the exhibition has a more of a fluid sequence. All of the pieces are powerful and I feel that you could start at any point if the show and still understand her work.

Visitor Observations
I think that visitors under the age of 25 would enjoy findings all of the different items that they can recognize in her sculptures. The over 25 crowd would enjoy the same thing, however I think they would also enjoy the symbolism in all the those items, creating a larger picture.
Visitors can share their experience with others by talking to other people in the gallery or by spreading their experience with family, friends, or colleagues.
